Sentranced Saturday: whatever happens to you belongs to you. Make it yours.

sentranced (adj.): the state of being captivated by a well-written sentence.

Sentranced Saturday is a weekly meme created by me that encourages you to share a quote that left you entranced. I have a little notebook that I carry with me everywhere to write down quotes that inspire me in some way, and I am sure that I am not alone! Everyone is welcome to participate, please be sure to link to this post so I can see all of your quotes!

“Whatever happens to you belongs to you. Make it yours. Feed it to yourself even if it feels impossible to swallow. Let it nurture you, because it will.”

Cheryl Strayed, Tiny Beautiful Things

Perhaps I should rename this weekly post “Kaleena’s Existential Corner,” where I can wear a beret and talk about my ennui. 😛 I feel like more often than not the lines that resonate deeply for me are those with philosophical tenets which cause me to evaluate my life and my relationship/view of it. Tiny Beautiful Things is full of so many beautifully crafted lines, but this one is one of my favorites. Especially now as I am moving forward from an incredibly toxic environment, or trying to at least because the scars are very much a part of me now. But this quote reminds me to try and let it fuel me in a positive way — I am a stronger person as a result and better equipped to handle future struggles. My experience is very much my own. It happened. It sucked. But I am better for it. Own the experience; don’t let it own you. (I refuse to be the victim anymore, damnit!)

If you have never read Tiny Beautiful Things, I cannot recommend it enough. (Cheryl Strayed is the author of Wild, which was of course turned into a movie a few years ago.) This book is beautiful and poetic and I am so glad this book was required reading for one of my courses in 2013. (Yes, really!) I am not one for self-help columns and was super skeptical at the inclusion of this on our syllabus, but this collection of Dear Sugar responses is stunning. My copy went MIA and I just bought a new one… cannot wait to give it a fresh read five years later!

  1. I love your quote this week and that you have used it to remind you to keep positivity and light around you, even if you have to fuel said light with things that made you learn hard lessons! The quote that stuck out to me most this week was:
“I am both worse and better than you thought.”
    — Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals Of Sylvia Plath
Sylvia Plath is one of my favorite writers and her lines always make me feel like there is so much more meaning to her work than some realize. This line just reminds me that sometimes we may not be doing great in some aspects, but it is still possible that we are flourishing in others. We are never completely bad off.
