Welcome to Reading Around the Globe, a series here on Reader Voracious Blog geared at fostering a culture of understanding in the bookish community about access to books in various countries around the world. I wanted to take the time to help educate those that live in the US/UK/EU/AUS that the privilege we experience is not universal and thought that one of the most constructive ways that I can boost marginalized voices is to help share their experiences.
Friends, let’s talk real quick about the privilege that we in the US/UK/AUS have because we live where we do.
The Big Five publishing houses are largely HQ’d in the US and Europe:
– Macmillan
– Hachette [France]
– HarperCollins
– Penguin/Random House
– Simon & Schuster https://t.co/XyFIrsJHEUโ Kaleena ๐ Reader Voracious (@kalventure) July 28, 2018
Using my above Tweet thread as a guide, I created a 14 question interview and asked the international book blogging community if they would be interested in sharing their experiences for a post. I received such an overwhelming response that what was originally planned as one post has grown into this series!
Each post highlights a full interview with one international reader and I will update this master page to include links to each interview organized by country/region.ย The first interview post was published on August 19, 2018 and is now a weekly post happening on Saturdays!

This is fantastic! I can’t wait to read all of these articles. I’ve often wondered what it would be like to be in a country where books weren’t as readily accessible as they are here in the US. I can’t imagine not being able to walk 3 or 4 blocks down to the library, grab what I want and come home. Or have access to books on NetGalley. It actually makes me feel horrible for how bad my review percentage is on there, considering there are people who wish for those ARCs but don’t get them.

Thank you so much, and I am really glad that you found the series! I hope you enjoy reading the interviews and perspectives from readers around the world. It has been really eye opening for me to hear from others just how different access to books is and how privileged we are in the US even beyond the ARC access.
